History


Formation and first album (1983-1984)
The band (originally Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem) was formed in high school, Fairfax High School by a group of students attending the school: Anthony Kiedis, Hillel Slovak, Jack Irons, and Michael "Flea" Balzary. The latter had just finished a brief stint as bassist for one of the first hardcore punk group from Los Angeles called Fear, but his interest in the black sounds did resign in 1983.
Slovak and Irons in turn, were in another band What Is This?, But the permanent members of Red Hot Chili Peppers (Anthony and Flea) and did not want to jump right into the market Punk. The first performance of them was in the "Rhythm Lounge", which was attended by 30 people. For this concert, they had composed a song clearly inspired by the fusion of punk, rap and funk of the single "The Magnificent Seven" by The Clash but with the new attitude and faster savage hardcore punk, the later known "Out in LA ". The live performance of the band was so good that they were asked to return the following week. Due to this unexpected success, the band members changed the name to Red Hot Chili Peppers, because they saw the original name a little uncomfortable. Then continued playing in several concerts in clubs and cabarets like the Kit Kat Club. It is in these early stages when they start to become popular for their performances in which he appeared completely naked, with only a sock on the genitalia (Sock on Cock). Six of the songs they played on those shows were recorded on their first demo.

Several months after his first performance, the band signed to EMI. But two weeks ago, What Is This? had obtained a contract with MCA, as Slovak and Irons left Red Hot Chili Peppers and engaged What is this?. Kiedis and Flea thought of dissolving the band, but decided to recruit new members. Cliff Martinez, an acquaintance of Flea, asked to join the Chili Peppers soon after. Jack Sherman also join the pirate king.
